Conflicts – Lord of the Flies                                      Kirsch

The conflict in Lord of the Flies is Character vs. Environment. This conflict begins with a group of school boys stranded on an uninhabited island with no way off. The boys decide to make a signal fire to attempt to get rescued. But the conflict changes in the book when one boy in the group, Jack, who is tired of following orders of the group’s chief, Ralph and rebels and makes his own tribe.
Now, the major conflict has changed from Character vs. Environment to Civilization vs. Savagery. Ralph’s tribe is civilized because they have rules and they respect human rights even though there are no adults to stop them. Jack’s tribe acts like savages. Whatever they do, whether it is hunting or just playing involves violence. An example of this violence is, in the novel a boy disobeyed Jack and Jack beat him as punishment. From now until the end of the book there are some small conflicts between the civilized tribe of Ralph and the savage tribe of Jack.
There were other small conflicts in the first part of the novel that led up to the major one; one such conflict is the Boys vs. Beastie. At the beginning of the novel, the smaller boys of the group think there is a monster lurking about on the island. At first, the boys are scared of the beast but as the fear spreads amongst the group the boys become interested in killing the beast. This conflict is a transition to the major one because some boys are eager to kill the beast and some are not. This conflict increases the violence being used in the group.
Another conflict that leads up to the major one is, Piggy vs. Boys. In the novel some boys especially Jack, bully Piggy for being fat and having asthma. The bulling escalates from verbal to violence when Jack pushes Piggy and breaks a part of his glasses. This conflict was a step towards the violence and barbaric ways of Jack and his tribe. In conclusion these are two smaller conflicts that relate and lead up to the major conflict of Civilization vs. Savagery.

Journal #4 ~Sophie

Journal #4
Well my prediction from the last journal was right it really does not get better. I am really disappointed with this book, my expectations were really high, and I was really excited to read it. Everyone told me that it was one of the best books that they ever read, and honestly I really do not agree. It was really boring to read, and nothing really exciting happened. The chapters were too long and boring, nothing would happen throughout the chapter and at the end, something would happen. I was always so confused because I would zone out and then read that someone died, and I would think ‘huh? What just happened?’ because I wasn’t paying attention.  It was often frustrating to read, because of that. The ending of the book was decent although I wasn’t expecting them to get rescued, because the twins never really kept the fire going, they would always fall asleep, and when the planes flew over the fire was probably too dim for them to notice. I also thought no one would find them because it seems like many planes were flying away from the country because of a nuclear war and you would think that the army would be too preoccupied with that. I really do not think that this book was very realistic in that way. I find that some aspects about the human nature were true though, like for example how everyone ended up going crazy near the end, but in the beginning I think they should have been freaking out a little more. I am happy that have finally finished the book and I now know what everyone is talking about, at least now I can actually tell them my opinion :)

I am still kind of disappointed with the book but finally people are reacting like they should, most people are panicking and crying. Perfect! I’m happy that they are reacting the way they should, I’m not happy about their pain and tears, haha don’t worry I am not some sick twisted psychopath that enjoys seeing kids go crazy! I feel really bad for Simon I don’t think he deserved to die like that, well I don’t think any of the children deserve to die, and I think that it is totally appropriate to freak out once you have figured out that you might not see your friends, family or cats ( that would probably be my main concern ) again.  Simon was the first to react like something was wrong and he was the first to die, I feel like that many other people will have the same fate as him. At least Jack seems to be enjoying himself killing pigs with his tribe. I would never expect choir boys to be the ones to willingly go hunting for food. I find the book a little confusing though it is probably because I tend to zone out half way through each chapter, thinking about stupid things like “what is for supper?” or “I wonder what it would be like to be a cat”, needless to say the book does not keep me interested at all, I just can’t get myself into it, reading the book feels more like a chore than a way to relax. I really, REALLY hope that the book becomes more interesting during the last chapters, although I kind of gave up hope because I have been saying this for every journal so far. Ill “see you” in the next journal!

Journal entry #4

Journal entry #4

The last stretch of the book was all together pretty disappointing. Everyone raves that this book is New York Times #1 best seller material when honestly, it wasn’t that good. Like a TV show loosing an audience and money, they killed off characters that were common favorites in the group, which made me loose interest towards the end. Piggy didn’t deserve to die, nor did I ever expect him to die, due to his innocence and how he was bullied. I’m going to say the book was ok, because the beginning wasn’t that bad. Jack should have died, no one deserves to die in life, but Jack was on my list for the character that was expected to die. I found the book hard to read, because the chapters are split in three’s, and every chapter is so long that it makes time seem to sloooooowwww down. I may have complained allot about the book, but I can say that the symbolism used in the book was superb, in the most part…. I find that the survival elements in this book were cliché, as in the author tried his best to portray the picture of being trapped on an island.
Many of us may say we would be completely calm, chill and alert when on an unknown island. In reality, insanity is a human’s downfall. People have been tested in real world situations,  such as plane crash’s in remote jungles, were they result in doing things such as cannibalism because of how they’re brains have been traumatized, its because were hungry, it may play a big role, but allot of it is psychological. I did allot of complaining about this book, but maybe in the future it may help if I’m ever stranded on an island with a bunch of kids xD

Journal entry 4 - The Last One

Well after reading the last part of the book I am not impressed. Every body that know is like always saying read the book it is so good. The book was good at the start at that time I was impressed I had high hopes for the book, but in the third part I hated it. At the end of the book it was really hard to read how Jack and his Tribe treated people and Ralph. Jack beating people for disobeying him is just not right. Also I don't understand how Piggy died, did Jack kill him or did another hunter. Every body on the island goes bananas, barbaric, and savage. Overall the end of the book was hard to read. Again the book started as an adventurer but then it was a fight for survival. I hated that piggy died he did not deserve it. He was a big help and he always fought with his mind not with his spear, that is what I really liked about him. If any thing Jack should have died, that would have been a happy ending for me. I hated jack from the start, he is a dick. But the ending that the book had was okay with me. At leased their was a happy ending. But for me, the ending was a suprseed. I thought the ending was going to be like Romeo and Juliet were every body dies. I thought Ralph would die and the tribe would run out of pigs to hut and they would resort to cannibalism. Jack would be the only one left on the island and he would die from starvation. The one thing that I wondered as I closed the book is, what would happen to the tribe. Maybe they would east each other. I think I am right, my predictions have been right throughout the book. To conclude the book in my opinion the book started good and ended horribly, but I am glade that I read it.

Lord of the Flies, or why symbolism is a bad thing

Lord of the Flies is a great book. It's a study in the gradual deterioration of human psyche and society, framed in an unusual plot. It's a complex, intriguing story pulling the reader along through continuously increasing cruelty, without ever really sinking into mental gorn. I count it among the top fifteen-something books I've read, and recommend it to anyone who is equipped with adequate disillusionment and cynicism. Now for the real point of this review.
Lord of the flies is a perfect example of what I dislike about the use of symbolism. When I read it, I took every part of it at face value, and enjoyed it. I then did some light research on the symbolism embedded in the story. As an experiment, I applied the most commonly agreed upon symbolic meanings, and here is the story as it looked afterward: [Humanity] finds [democracy] and establishes [civilization]. [The devil] eventually causes conflict in [civilization], culminating in the death of [rationality] and the destruction of [democracy]. Ta-daa, a detailed and compelling story has been turned into something that could fit on a post-it note. Technically, you could argue that the non-symbolic plot could be summarized just as easily, but there's a difference; When reading the book as a non-symbolic story, every little action or detail can be interpreted as something, namely itself. When reading the book symbolically, almost all of it turns into meaningless fluff. Sure, one could try to put symbolic meaning in all of it, but that would result in a schizophrenic, incoherent mess of abstract nouns.
In conclusion: Lord of the Flies is a great book. Also, symbolism reduces reduces complex and creative fiction to short, blunt messages. Yet, for some reason, people think it provides a given work with deeper meaning. Broad subject, somewhat controversial view. Let the rebutting commence.

Journal entry #4

After reading the last chapters of the book I can say I did not like the book. After Piggy died my opinion on the book plummeted. Everyone went insane and became a complete savage except Ralph and the twins. The last chapter dragged on about Ralph thinking should I do this or that over and over again. They started a fire and then it was just running and hiding and running and hiding... I like that they got rescued in the end but Piggy should have been there. When Piggy died it was like all hope on the island had disappeared. The conch went with Piggy which I thought symbolized the fall of Ralph cause the conch was like the symbol of sanity and of order. Jack was just a power hungry fool who turned everyone into a savage. Everyone but Jack should have been rescued and he should have been left behind to hunt pig for the rest of his life. If Jack wasn’t on the island I think that they could have had their sanity till they got rescued and everyone might have stayed to the rules. But because Jack was there he started his own tribe and got almost everyone to join just because everyone seemed to love killing pigs. It was a very dark book saying human nature can be so bad without rules. Saying kids can lose their minds with no parents. It went from boring to a bit exciting to weird to dark and creepy.I would not recommend the book to anyone because it was weird, dark, confusing and boring at some parts. I find it annoying that almost all books you read in school are old, depressing and often weird. I can just add this to the books I disliked reading at school.

 Character questions and answers
Mathieu Berlinquette
1.    With the “mutiny” against Ralph, proposed by Jack, why would Jack want to be the leader? Other then the stupid excuses he used to convince the group of kids.
A.   Jack and Ralph have been rivalries since the beginning. Starting with the first vote for leader.

2.     Why is Simon so attracted to the pig’s head?

A.   Simon was going insane, but at the same time was seeing the truth of whom or what was the real beast.

3.     Why is Jack acting the way he’s acting? As in what is causing he’s    strange behavior?

A.     The thirst of power, the thirst of being the leader of his own group.
Another answer could be that he’s going insane.

4.     Piggy stays close to Ralph in a large chunk of the book, why?

A.   Ralph is the oldest besides Piggy, they do belong in the Bigums group, but Ralph, in Piggy’s eyes, is a leader and a friend.

5.     Why would Bill and Roger leave Ralph’s “group”?

A.     They have the idea that Jack’s group is allot more fun/interesting.

6.     Sam and Eric are in a sense, push-overs. Will this be they’re downfall in the future?

A.     Yes it will, I have a feeling Jack will take advantage of them.

7.     Ralph can be called a leader, but at the same time, one can call him a follower. Why?
A.   Ralph is frightful of Jack, at the end of chapter nine and in the chapters to come, he is staring to give up and fallow Jack’s ruling.

8.     Who is the Lord of the flies?
     A. An imaginary entity, but portrayed as the dead pilot.

9.     Are the characters of the lord of the flies in any way a good match? Do they create good chemistry throughout the chapters?

   A.  They are a very dysfunctional bunch with no good connections      between each other, other then Ralph and Piggy.

   10.  Do you think Zack, even before him being on the island, was a bully   at school?

     A. I most definitely think so.
Journal Entry #3

To begin, all I got to say is that what ever is left of the group’s willingness to stick together is, or soon will be, gone. The mutiny that was suggested by Zack was brought to question Ralph’s ability to be a leader, saying that Ralph was a cowered and a terrible leader. By saying that, he was able to “overthrow” Ralph’s power as leader and essentially kick him to the curb. Looking at world politics these days, after going thru hard times, certain country’s demand a new leader. In some cases change is good, but others can lead in disaster. What I’m trying to get at is that in this case, they are changing leader’s for “enjoyment”, meaning they want to have fun instead of focus on important jobs and responsibility’s. In my mind this group is doomed, Piggy and Ralph are going to take heat from the opposing leader as already shown, but something BIG will happen soon. At this point, I know for a fact that characters will start to die off; unfortunately Simon was the first victim of this island of insanity. It bothers me that Simon had knowledge of who the Lord of the flies really was, and then was accidently killed. The book is getting depressing, instead of progress, they are getting more and more…..CRAZY! I know I relate allot of this book to world events and personal life, but there’s sooo much resemblances. Like a horror movie, it’s not going to end nice, people are being put out of the picture one by one, and the group’s sanity is being tested. Overall these past 3 chapters have been eventful, but I have a feeling we haven’t seen anything yet. Now to the final stretch!

Liam I agree with you about what the Lord of the Flies symbolizes. i also agree with you that the book is getting worse. it just does not have that adventurer felling anymore.

Journal Entry 3 - Kirsch

The third part of the book really bored me. I find the book is getting worse and worse as it goes. But I really enjoyed the ninth chapter. It was interesting how most of the boys in Ralph's group join Jack's new tribe. I would join Jack's tribe because I would get meat and fruit. But the only problem is we would not make a fire and we would not get rescued. If I join Ralph's group we would have fruit but no meat and we have a better chance to get rescued. Again the dance around the fire shows how savage the boys are becoming. I don't like how Simon was the first person die in the book. I don't think he deserved it. Also when Simon got killed he lost the message that the beast dose not exist but it is just a man in a parachute. Now the boys still think the beast exists and the might not go up the mountain to start the fire ever again. I knew that the beast was not real and it was all in there heads. I also think the pilot replacing the fire on the mountains in chapter 7 represents the deterioration of human hope. I was also right how the group will split up, but i did not think that most of the bigluns would go with Jack. I am confused about how Simon found the dead pig head. Did he get it off the pig that Jack's tribe killed in the chapter 9. I how understand were the tittle of the book comes from the Lord of the Flies is a dead pig head. Also my prediction of were Jack and his new tribe make camp was true. They made their camp on castle rock. it is the most likeliest place for the barbarians to go. Over all this part of the book bored me a lot except for the 9th chapter. most of my predictions were right.

Journal entry #3

After reading the third quarter of the book I can say it seems weird and creepy. It seems as if a lot of kids are slowly going insane and turning savage. Only a few still have some sense like Ralph and Piggy. Jack has finally started his new tribe trying to get everyone to join. During the last chapter Simon has been killed showing how savage they are getting. Also we have finally learned what the lord of the flies is. The lord of the flies is a pigs head on a stick which I find symbolizes insanity and savages. The characters have also seen the “beast” for the first time and overreacted. Even if its a dead person there is no reason to think that it's going to come back from the dead and eat them but they are kids looking at a destroyed face so I guess they didn't even know it was human. One thing I found odd was that Ralph thought they wouldn't be found because they couldn't have a fire on the mountain and it took a long time before anyone thought of just simply moving the fire until Piggy said it. When I was reading chapter nine I realized that they never stopped talking about the chanting, the thunder and the dancing so I kind of “zoned out” then when I red the last three paragraphs it said Simon's dead body was floating in the ocean. I didn't realize Simon had died so I had to reread some of it. My opinion on the book is getting worse even though there is more action it's starting to get really weird and creepy. I think it will only get worse in the last 2 or 3 chapters and Jacks tribe will grow more and soon be complete savages.

Journal #2

Journal #2

As per usual, there is tension on the island. Ralph spots a ship in the distance, but is unclear as to if the smoke signal is burning or not. In the end, it turns out the fire wasn’t supervised during the pig hunt. I can understand why Ralph is so angry, the group of children lost possibly they’re only chance at being rescued. On that note, while the boys are “having fun” with they’re war paint and they’re chanting of “Kill the pig. Cut her throat. Spill her blood”, they neglect to do other duties around camp. Such as, I don’t know… KEEP THE SIGNAL GOING! One observation I’ve made is that the kids have been split into two groups, (Which I guessed would happen right from the start) the Bigums and the Littluns. The Littluns are allot more vulnerable in this situation, considering they are the youngest on the island. I find that not to be a smart idea because in a sense, the younger children are left to fend for themselves. I find it funny that Piggy’s glasses are being used in different scenarios like a multi-tool. Then there’s the meeting, the meeting is a big factor in this chapter. Many topics are brought up such as the beast and sanitation around the camp. Moving more on the scary side, its creepy that a dead pilot is drifting down from above after air-air combat. Personally, that would shake me up and put me on edge, not to mention I’m roughly 5 years older then these kids. What I’m trying to say is that maybe in the future, this will stick with them mentally. So far the book is getting more and more interesting, but I’m expecting something big to come in just a few chapters. Again excuse my tardiness, I have been very busy this past week.

Journal #2

So far my opinion on the book has remained the same, although I find the book is slowly improving now that the conflict has been put into place. Jack and Ralph are still not getting along which I expected because they are both good leaders that want to have control over the people on the island. I am happy that more and more of the children are reacting like they should. Although they are acting very barbaric like when Jack refused to share the pigs meat with the others. I like how Piggy is starting to stand up for himself, I think in the next few chapters he will definitely continue to stand up for himself. I am wondering if they will ever get rescued, there were a few planes that flew over the island but no one was tending to the signal fire so the pilots probably dint notice anything unusual about the island. No one is really taking the duties seriously anymore. I think later in the book the “groups” will break up and everyone will have to fend for themselves. Jack seems obsessed with killing pigs, it seems like that is how he shows his leadership to others. Whenever I see Piggy’s name I think of Jack’s obsession with killing the pigs, I feel like there will be fight in between the two characters and then Jack will become obsessed with killing the real piggy. I feel like that’s why the author choose the name Piggy for the character instead of other nicknames that could be used to describe larger children, like tubby, fatty or chubby. I hoping that the book continues to improve and more conflict comes into play. I think that will see more fights in between the two groups and they will eventually break up.
P.S I’m sorry the journal  was so late I thought I posted it on Sunday, I checked the website today and saw that it wasn't there :/

Journal Entry 2 - Kirsch
Painted Faces and Long Hair/ Beast from the Water/ Beast from the Air

As I read through the seconded part of the book it has become clear to me that they are not going to stop bullying Piggy. Piggy makes so much suggestions to the group and boys such as Jack just tell him to shut up. They are all real jerks. The boys on the island are becoming more and more crazy. I mean that they are becoming so violent. Every thing that the boys think about is either killing something or fighting somebody. I think that Jack will try and gain power in the third half of the book. He is challenging Ralph and questioning Ralph's actions. I believe that in the future Jack will lead a rebellion to over-through Ralph. The one thing that I do not understand is where is the dead pilot on the island. The part of the chapter were it explains what happened to the dead body is so confusing. The saying the hunters chant “ kill the pig, cut her throat, spill her blood,” just shows you how crazy and barbaric the hunters are coming. It was really mean that Jack would not share the meat with the boys that did not hunt with him. I think that Jack is the biggest bully on the island. I think that if Ralph does not do something to keep all the boys in line, all hope is lots for them being rescued. The beast is not real and the beast is just all in the boy's heads. Nobody seen the beast clearly. What some of the boys are seeing as the beast are probably the mirages. Also the littluns are just dreaming and thinking they are in reality. To concluded the second part of the book was not that interesting to me, it is no longer an adventure but it is survival situation. The author is not making the survival situation interesting. I hope that the third part of the book it more interesting.

Journal entry #2

After reading half the book I can say I'm not enjoying it as much because at first it seemed like an adventure/survival story but now it's just survival. It looks like it's starting to turn into survival of the fittest. it seems as if what I said before about Jack might be coming true. He is growing very angry with Ralph and doesn't obey his orders. It looks like he has picked out a good spot to move to because he was saying how nice it would be to make a fort with all the rocks. A lot of people seem to be ignoring the main job which is the fire to get rescued. All they seem to care about is killing the pig except a few of them. The group seems to be falling apart. You can tell some people are starting to slip out of reality because a lot of people started believing in this beast which I don't think existed until chapter six. The beast is a dead person with a parachute so it's not even alive. I find the only two reasons of the group falling apart are because of this fictional beast and Jack. I feel bad for Piggy. I think when he said that if Jack were chief he wouldn't do anything to bad to Ralph but he would to Piggy is true. Piggy seems to have the best ideas but no one listens to him except Ralph sometimes. After the assembly broke up and no one was obeying Ralph anymore I think what he said was right. If he blew the conch again and no one came back it's all over because there is no order anymore and everyone will just do what they want. I want them to get rescued soon but there is still half the book to go.

Questions - Lord of the Flies – 2/4  Kirsch

1)      Do you think name littluns is a suitable tittle for the younger boys?

Yes I do because they are smaller than the rest of the boys in the group.

2)      Do you believe that the hunters are becoming obsessed with killing pigs? Will this lead to dangerous events in the future?

The hunters are becoming obsessed with hunting and killing the pigs. The frays “kill the pig. Cut her throat. Spill her blood,” is great example of how obsessed the hunters are becoming.  I think this obsession will lead to dangerous events in the future.

3)      Is Jack’s knife a symbol? If so, what does it represent?

It is a symbol. It represents death.

4)      Explain what the dancer around the fire means in chapter 4?

It represents the boy’s new way of life, that they are becoming more barbaric.  They are moving away from the organization of Ralph.

5)      Is the beast real?

No it is not, the beast is all in the boy’s heads. The boys are imagining things because they are scared.

6)      Would you be stressed out if you were in Ralph’s position, from the lack of organization?
Yes I would be because I get stressed out very easily. Also the boys are trying to survive and some boys are not ding there job properly and disobeying me.

7)      Do you think jack would be a suitable replacement for ralph as chief?

No I do not because Jack lacks the skills needed to be a leader and to survive.

8)      Why do all the older boys decide to go on the trip to the caves in chapter six?

The older boys are scared of the beast and don’t want to be left behind with the littluns. They would be venerable for the beast to take them.

9)      Do you think, when Jack joins Ralph in the cave to look for the beast they again feel the comradeship they once had between each other?

Yes they do fell the comradeship again. The situation reminds them of their first trip together to the top of the mountain the chapter 2.

10)   Does the castle rock represent an ideal home for barbarians?

Yes it does because the castle rock is close to a forest and it has boulders to push down on the enemy.

Sophie, I do not agree with you about the characters being stupid. They are just trying to have fun without any parents around. They are just kids, maybe they enjoy having there cloths off.  I do zone off in the long chapters sometimes too, but I reread just like you do. I do not understand fully why you don’t enjoy the book it is so good.

Kirsch

Liam, I agree that piggy should have been the leader. But nobody elected him as the leader because he is different and fat. Even though I did not put it in my journal I am glade that somebody agrees with me about Piggy being the leader. As well I don’t think there will be a beast later on in the book. I believe it is all in the boy’s heads.

Kirsch

Matt I agree with you about how everyone is treating piggy, the pore kid he is just trying to help. Also I do not think they are getting off to the wrong start because what they are doing in a survival situation is exactly what I would be doing.  We are both in cadets and we all know that the procedure is to build shelter find water and food. I hope you went through that training in your cadet career.  Lastly, I like how you pointed out that the author is explaining the secondary characters in groups. I never saw that thanks.

Kirsch
PS I always do my homework before cadets.

Journal #1 ~Sophie

Up to this point I am not enjoying The Lord of the Flies. The reasons I do not like the book so far are because the characters are unintelligent, and not very interesting, for example, most of the children take off their clothes as soon as they get on the island like it’s a beach party, aside from Ralph and Jack none of them are really thinking ahead. None of the children are reacting like they should, most people after being through a plane crash and being abandoned on an island would be freaking out, especially if they were the age of the children on the island. The only person that has really reacted to what has happened is Simon.  I find it very hard to relate to any of the characters and develop feelings for them. The pace of the story is very slow, nothing really interesting has happened so far. Most of the first three chapters involve just introducing the setting. A few symbols have been introduced such as the conch and “the creepers”. I am looking forward to figure out what they symbolize. I find that the chapters are very long, and it is hard to stay interested, I usually zone out, and have to reread the chapter again to fully understand it. I still have nine chapters to go so I am hoping that the pace of the story picks up and the characters show more depth. Most people who see that I am reading The Lord of the Flies tell me that it takes a bit for the plot to become interesting. I am expecting to see more action in the next few chapters, perhaps something about “beasty” the large snake that several children have mentioned.  I am also expecting a fight to break out in between Ralph and Jack.

6. To establish the setting.
7.  To make it a bit of a mystery at first and it wasn't needed.
8. Because he had the conch that brought everyone together and he was already acting like a leader when everyone came.
9. I do agree a bit but I think the best leader would have been the Piggy because he seemed like the most intelligent and had the best ideas even though he has less physical ability.
10. Because even though they were stranded it was still an island full of life.

Journal entry #1

So far I find the book a quite a bit exiting. Although everyone elected Ralph the leader I think Piggy would have been the best leader because he seems the most intelligent and wiser than everyone. He also seems to care more about everyone. Though if I was in the crowd with all the kids I probably would have voted for Ralph because he was already acting like a good leader after calling everyone with the conch. I think that Ralph is a good leader now because he takes in everyone's ideas but I think Piggy would be better even if he has less physical abilities. I expected Jack to be more angry to Ralph about being leader but he seems to be agreeing and going along with him. I thought there might be some jealousy and he might split off with the quire as his own group. If that did happen there might be some kind of a war going on between them. I find it a bit ironic how Piggy is calling everyone kids because no one was listening to him but him complaining makes him seem childish and really they're all kids. Since they are all kids it's really unpredictable what they are going to do with no adults around to tell them what to do and what not to do. None of the older kids paid attention to the little kids already. They also started a forest fire which they think there might be some little kids in. One of the kids mentioned a beastie or a snake which no one believed to exist but if rumors started spreading people might believe and panic. I don't see them getting rescued any time soon because there are still 9 chapters in the book and I don't see how the story could continue for so long if they did.

Journal entry 1!

Journal entry 1!!!!!
Chapter’s 1-3

First impression’s on this book? I think it’s great! The way the author leave’s out certain parts as to what happened and why it happened makes me want to keep reading! It’s inevitable that it will be explained in the future and for that reason, I want to keep reading to find out. The author describes only the main characters, which I find odd because he (the author) only briefly describes the other children on the island. I’m thinking its showing the importance of the kids as individuals; they will probably be addressed as a group of children instead of individual children. Don’t you guys feel bad for “piggy”! He’s being bullied by kids that are younger then him! Even Ralph has succumbed to the peer pressure. When the conk is blown and all the kids on the island emerge from all around, they quickly decide a leader. Its obvious that even after coming to a vote making Ralph the leader, there will be complications with other’s (singling out Jack) wanting the power Ralph has just received. I can see that the children on the island are very optimistic about being rescued, not realizing where they are, help, like Ralph explains, might take a long time. One more observation I have is that there mostly focusing on killing pigs and signaling boats passing bye. They haven’t killed a pig yet and they’re signaling for boats on an island with civilization nowhere in sight. I’m thinking they’re starting off on the wrong foot, does anyone agree? The book so far has been interesting, making me want to read more to un-ravel un-answered questions.
P.S I just came back from cadet's half an hour ago. So please excuse my tardiness.

Journal Entry 1 -  Sound of the Shell/ Fire on the Mountain/ Huts on the Beach.     Kirsch

I really enjoyed the first quarter of the book. I was a bit confused when the author, William Golding, used the word conch because I didn't know what a conch was. But as I read through the chapters I found out that conch is another name for a shell.  Also in the first chapter, I did not understand why a choir would be marching as if they were in an army. I think the system where the boys can only speak when they are holding the shell is a great way to get everybody to listen.  Ralph is a great leader for the group of school boys. He is supportive and is open to suggestions.  Chapter one really got me hooked on the book and I could not stop reading after that.
The one thing that really bugged me in chapter two was how badly the boys treat Piggy. They rejected him because he is fat and has asthma. They constantly call him fatty and tell him to shut up. It just makes me feel bad because he is just trying to help and they bully him.
I like how the boys made a fire, to alert a ship of their presence on the island. It is a common survival technique.
Lastly, I enjoyed how the boy’s goal on the island is not only to get rescued but to have fun, with no grownups around. I would have a blast on the island too.  It is a great idea to have people doing jobs such as hunting and looking after the fire. But Ralph and Jack lack the discipline needed to keep the boys from slacking off. Overall the first quarter of the book really got me hooked and I can’t wait to read more.
